Student Activities

English majors have a wide variety of resources at their disposal should they wish to engage themselves beyond the classroom. We are affiliated with Sigma Tau Delta, the national English honor society, and encourage our majors to join. Throughout the semester, we sponsor talks, panels, and workshops as well as social activities on campus. Our faculty work closely with students to submit their work to academic conferences, both regionally and nationally. Students can also submit their work for publication in two department-supported publications: the JRAD (Journal of Research Across the Disciplines) accepts research-based work and the Aquarian publishes creative work. Finally, if students are interested in developing their teaching skills, the University Writing Center (housed in the Council building as well) accepts applications from English majors for paid tutoring positions.

Facilities & Resources

Here in the Council building, we provide our students with access to a number of resources that can be beneficial to them both in the classroom and in their own scholarly lives.  The Council building contains a Mac lab with publishing, word processing, and video software as well as classrooms equipped with digital projectors, video and audio equipment to facilitate presentations.

Internships and Career Opportunities

Students not only earn academic credit for internship experiences, but also valuable work experience that complements their education and helps them gain hands-on experience in their chosen career.

Through the Certificate in Editing program, students complete a required internship in the fields of marketing, publishing, law, news media, and public relations.

More broadly, the English Major emphasizes general skills like critical thinking and writing and our graduates have gone on to a wide range of careers and accomplishments.  Our graduates further their study through attending graduate school in creative writing, rhetoric and composition, and literature; they go to medical, business, and law school; they have successfull careers in management, higher education, publishing/editing, and law. Employers of our graduates include Viewpoint, the Otis Smith Foundation, Data Systems, Inc., 探花族 Public Libraries, the Duval County School District, several universities, and the U.S. House of Representatives.
