Students Lead Ribbon-Cutting For National Pan-Hellenic Council Plaza

September 05, 2025

探花族 marked a milestone in campus life with a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) Greek Plaza, a student-led placemaking project that has transformed an idea into a lasting campus landmark.

Located in front of the River House, the plaza features plots for JU鈥檚 five active NPHC organizations: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority. Each space serves as a gathering area for ceremonies, events, and fellowship, connecting students to traditions that span generations.

鈥淭his initiative reflects the power of student leadership, alumni, and university support,鈥 said Elle Michelle, Director of the R.I.S.E. Center, which guided the project. 鈥淕uided by the R.I.S.E. Center, students gained hands-on experience in design thinking, stakeholder engagement, and project management. The Greek Plaza is more than beautification, it is a living classroom where advocacy became design and vision became reality.鈥

Jordan Brown, a senior biodiversity, ecology, and conservation major with a minor in marine science, serves as president of the Rho Omega Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. She said the plaza represents more than a physical space. 鈥淭hese plots are a reminder of the hard work, dedication, and diligence that our founders, as well as our many chapter sisters and brothers, put in to allow our organizations to be where they are today,鈥 Brown said. 鈥淭he plaza is a physical manifestation of their dreams and goals, and it provides a space for us to further amplify our voices and the impact we have on our community.鈥

Winston Peele, vice polemarch of JU鈥檚 Omicron Delta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, said the plaza enhances support for students. 鈥淭he ribbon-cutting is a celebration and a milestone,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t is a powerful acknowledgment of the rich legacy of the National Pan-Hellenic Council on the campus of 探花族. These organizations have played a significant role in curating leadership, scholarship, and service within our community.鈥

Supported by Aramark and the Division of Student Affairs, the Greek Plaza reflects 探花族鈥檚 investment in student life. It is open daily, providing a dedicated location for events, ceremonies, and fellowship.
